Class History:
In 2366 a Federation task force of 40 Starships engaged the Borg at Wolf 359. The task force was destroyed by the Borg in one of the most horrific losses in Federation history. Starfleet and the Federation Council moved quickly to replenish the fleet. Starfleet also realized that, because of the greater threat posed by the Borg, it's mandate would have to change. Thus, Starfleet commissioned several new starship classes to help strengthen the defense of the Federation. The Pioneer class was developed to be a medium size, heavily armed vessel with multi-mission capabilities. Like the word pioneer which is it's namesake, it is designed to be on the cutting edge of swift and powerful, cutting through enemy defenses quickly. The Pioneer design team has incorporated many of the Federation's latest technological advances into it's design. The project was halted in 2369 when the threat of borg incursion lessened. In 2373 the project was officially reopened due to Starfleet's requirement for combat ready ships to defend the federation in it's war with the Dominion. The Pioneer was redesigned with the latest technologies and construction bean. These latest technologies included ablative armor, advanced sensor countermeasures, and the latest weapons systems. However, production on the first space frame was limited due to the way and the rare nature of it's armor and hull; As at the time, the Federation's ship building resources were stretched to their max. However, by the end of the war, all available yards were building tactical grade vessels, and three ships were being built at the Utopia Planitia-Sebring Planetary Complex, a new site dedicated solely to 'Enhanced Cruisers' and 'Escorts'. There are three vessels in the Fleet to date, the USS Pioneer, the USS Scorpion and the U.S.S. Pegasus all of which are in the Service of Starfleet Special Operations.
