In this article I will attempt to explain the posting process, as far as making a new thread and/or a follow up post on a thread.
As I have explained in the article "Message Board Forum Structure" threads are a grouping of posts. A thread will have approximately about 15 posts per page, set by the administrator. A thread will also have as many pages as you need, perhaps infinite in number. A thread can also be short, numbering just a few posts or even 1 post.
Each thread will have a title based on the subject that a poster wishes to name it. Those that post there are encouraged to stay on the given topic, some threads are private as far as who is allowed to post there, still viewable to all.
For example, in the category KHG Imperial Vessels, Forum IKV HoS, Sub-board IKV HoS Duty logs. This is a good place to start a thread. One thread should be made for each duty post on this sub-board, OPS (Operations Officer) Duty Logs would be one posting thread. From now on, this thread will be dedicated to the operations post for their duty logs. Another thread can be made for CO (Commanding Officer) Duty Logs, and so on.
1.) Posting a new thread - In a Forum or Sub-board, you can post a new thread. I will give an example based on duty log posting.
For example, in the sub-board IKV HoS duty logs. You will have a title bar that has the following items Mark as Read, New Thread, New Poll. Some of those functions will viewable depending on your administration access.
Click on New Thread, after you have clicked on New Thread, a form will come up that you need to fill out. The first thing that you will do is name the thread by filling out the subject. In this particular section you would name your threads as follows. For those that are commanding officers, you would name the thread CO Duty Logs. For those that are CSEC (Chief Security Officer) will make a new thread for their duty logs.
The next step is the tool bar, I will write an article about this tool bar at a later time. The tool bar also uses BBC Codes that are very useful for a flexible posting experience.
The first post that you would make for the thread is a introduction for the thread. For example, "This thread is for Tactical Officers to post their duty logs. Only those that are assigned to this post may post here. Also guest simmers may be allowed to post in this thread if they have operated this post in the sim" End example. The next followup post may be posted here as an actual duty log.
At the bottom under the editing and posting field will be the following buttons. Post Message, Preview, Spell Check, reset.
a.) Post Message - Once you are done writing out your post or new thread message, click this button.
b.) Preview - This button allows you to preview the post before sending. Preview is very useful especially when you're using a lot of BBC code. Not to mention that you may want to read your new thread or post to check for spelling that the spell checker did not pick up, or to check your grammar and what you wrote.
c.) Spell Check - This button for the spell checker is a real useful function for posters, including for use by myself. That being said, there is no excuse to have a sloppy post with lots of misspelled words, that is what spell check is for.
d.) Reset - This button is used to clear the posting field. If you don't like your post, this button will erase what you have written in this field.
Once you feel that you are satisfied with your post, click the button Post Message and then you are all set as far as setting up the new thread is concerned. If you feel that you have made a mistake after posting that you did not see while writing, not to worry, you can click on Modify Post to edit your posts or new threads.
2.) Replying or entering a new post to an existing thread.
Making a post or replying on a given thread is not much different than making a new thread, only that you are replying to a post that was entered in a thread.
Simply click on the reply button at the top or the bottom of the already existing post. This will bring up a posting field that looks exactly the same as the form you used to post a new thread. For example, after you have simmed and wish to write a duty log, you would simply click reply and write out your duty post. You would do this each and every time that you write a duty log.
You can use the preview and spell checker as needed.
This wraps up the article about making a new thread or post. Enjoy and have fun with your posting experience.[/color]
